THE CASUAL CAIRO DETOURS TEAM
- CASUAL ESCORTS
Often our clients prefer to be assisted by a foreign resident when they don’t require the expertise an Egyptologist would provide, photo opportunities are of utmost importance, and/or when it’s just more comfortable to have someone like your big sister, uncle, or neighbor’s cousin here to show you around. For these tours, Casual Cairo detours offers three choices for you—
Aunt Debbie—
I came to Egypt in 1997 on holiday and fell in love with the country and the people. Now I like nothing more than ensuring that Casual Cairo detours’ customers have a memorable holiday in this country with as little hassle as possible. My wonderful crew of guides makes this possible, as you get a vacation experience that is much more than the average tourist enjoys.
Uncle Jim —
Since1978, when I first lived in Egypt, I have witnessed many changes in the country. But the mystery and charm of Egypt always remains constant. After nearly 20 years of working throughout the Middle East, this land of the Nile with its incomparable history and unmatched monuments is my favorite. Come, let me share it with you.
Sister Mel—
I am originally from New Zealand, but have lived in Egypt for the past 3 ½ years with my husband, who is managing a big feedlot on the Red Sea Coast for cattle that we import from abroad. We have two daughters, both of whom are at school here in Cairo.
All my life I have loved to travel, so it is a pleasure to work with Debbie and Casual Cairo detours, sharing these off-the-beaten-track tours we believe you will enjoy so much. This work gives me the opportunity to meet others who enjoy traveling as much as I do, people that immerse themselves in new experiences. I enjoy sharing what I have seen and learned in this wonderful country of contrasts.
- EGYPTOLOGISTS
Casual Cairo detours is proud to offer the best of the best Egyptologists in Egypt. They have all been hand picked for their language skills, personalities, and of course their knowledge of Egyptian history. Each one of them is open to discussing any subject, be it history, culture, religion, or politics. Feel free to openly ask questions.
May I introduce you to…
Mostafa Hassen—
To be able to introduce the history and culture of your country to the world is a real pride and a big responsibility. Therefore tour guiding is more than just a job for me. I have two degrees—one in History and the other in Tourism in addition to my current Master’s degree studies in Egyptology. I lived and studied in California, and I speak excellent English. I am so determined to show you the real Egypt!
Sherif Ghamry—

I was born in the Nile Delta region, 100 miles north of Cairo and moved to Cairo to attend Cairo University’s Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management in 1993. I’ve worked as an Egyptologist and Tour Guide since 1994 and love history. I enjoy people, adventure, and travel and want to introduce you to my native Egypt. I am able to guide in English or Spanish.
Ahmed Seddik—
I am an Egyptologist trained at the American University in Cairo, and guide tours throughout Egypt. I also teach hieroglyphics and lecture about all aspects of ancient Egypt in academia and public arenas. I have appeared in national and international media and plan to dig up ancient cities and build new ones. See my website at http://www.ahmedseddik.com/
Ahmed Hussein—
I studied history, archeology, hieroglyphics, and Egyptology for 4 years at Helwan University. I’ve worked as an Egyptologist for 13 years, and specialize in leading detailed tours all over Egypt. I love teaching people as much as possible about Egypt and enjoy this work so much.

Samir Abbass—
Tour guiding was not my first career. I graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture and was a successful horticulturist before realizing how much I liked meeting and talking with people from different cultures. I took evening classes to get myself ready for the new career. As I began giving tours as a student guide, I worked my way up to second in the class, even though I had to work to take care of my family as well as study. That shows you how much I love this job.
I take groups of tourist all over Egypt, but I best like showing the places that enable me to introduce you to the contemporary culture of Egyptians, such as mosques, medieval houses, old markets, and the City of the Dead. Learning about different cultures and customs helps people understand each other better.
In my tours, I encourage my guest to ask many questions—that's how I can best give you a tour that will match your interests.
Moemen Samir (Luxor and Upper Egypt)—
I was born in Luxor, Egypt in 1980 and studied Egyptian History and Archeology in a 4-year program. I’ve worked as a guide throughout all Upper Egypt for 7 years. As well, I have completed research papers on the Valley of the Kings and Luxor Temple, and received high marks on both. In 2004, I was voted “Best Guide in Luxor” by the local Egyptologist Guides Association. I speak Arabic, English, and Italian.
